Low-rise jeans, pleated mini skirts and an abundance of hot pink, this season brings back the best of the Noughties.
We’re officially in the throes of a full-blown Noughties renaissance. The murmurings have been there for a while: the return of skinny jeans and bubble hems, of “going out tops” and capri pants. But this season fashion brands have thrown themselves into the fray completely. At Diesel (available at Incu) low-rise jeans abound, at Supre and Bec + Bridge, we saw pleated mini skirts. Cargo pants are officially back, with fantastic high-street iterations at StyleRunner and Luck & Trouble (available at Universal Store). Don’t forget the ultimate 2000s outfit combination: jeans and a nice top. From crop tops to logo tees and even styling dresses over pants, it’s all coming back. On the accessories front, hot pink sunglasses and handbags sit neatly alongside that most polarising of all Y2K trends: the heeled thong. Here, we round-up the six biggest Noughties trends of the new season and tell you how to wear them.
Terrified of the return of low-rise jeans? Fear not, these new iterations come in more flattering silhouettes, with wide-leg styles at Zara and Supre, and bootleg cuts from Diesel (at Incu) and Abrand (at Universal Store). We suggest styling yours with a simple baby tee or a slouchy long-sleeved shirt, then keeping on-theme with flat or heeled thongs.

Stick to a neutral palette with these beige, brown and olive iterations from Needles (at Incu), Luck & Trouble (at Universal Store), Feel (at StleRunner) or try Aje's modern denim take on. Style with a simple sleeveless white tank, your favourite ballet flats and lashings of gold jewellery.

The most divisive shoe trend of the 2000s is officially back, the heeled thong. There is a surprising abundance of styles and shapes available. The slick minimalism of these black leather kitten heels from Seed, the unapologetic boldness of Tony Bianco’s take on the chunky wedge or the futuristic platform of Alias Mae’s Cullen Sandal (both available at David Jones). At Cotton On, the Rubi Shoes ‘Byron’ flatform style is a great everyday summer shoe. Style yours with loose-fitting denim and a form-fitting top – a mesh tank or fitted vest.

When it comes to Y2K dressing, the mini skirt is a bread-and-butter silhouette (think: Paris Hilton in her myriad pleated denim minis). At Bec + Bridge, their choc mini elevates this staple with a tailored circular cut in luxe pinstripe detailing, perfect for layering with long-sleeved tees, or (if you want to really commit to the trend) over form-fitting trousers. Supre offers a high street take on the classic broderie style, Worship's streak fade denim, available at Glue Store is quintessential Noughties. And for spring’s warmer nights, Luck & Trouble’s mint sequin mini, available at Universal Store, makes for the ideal party-ready pick – for nights that demand a little extra sparkle.

What’s a Noughties throwback without a little pink? Hot pink statements are key to nailing the Y2K trend, be it the adorable ‘Lacey’ pouch bag from Mimco’s new collection, Alexander Wang’s on-trend baby pink mesh tee (just add low-slung trousers or wide-leg jeans – available at Incu), Acne Studios’ wrap-around statement sunglasses or Aje’s classic 00s baby pink bubble skirt mini dress. Our advice? Less is more here – stick to your preferred palette of neutrals (denims, whites, blacks) and allow pink to serve as an unexpected pop-of-colour.

The pre-eminent after dark outfit formula in the 2000s could be embodied in a single phrase: jeans and a nice top. The statement shirt is a Y2K must-have, though this time we’re not limiting it to denim down below, you can wear these over your trusted low-rise denim, cargo pants, capri pants, layered skirts, even trackpants. We suggest embracing the whole plethora of Noughties-inspired styles. At H&M you’ll find cropped denim tops with elevated gold accent buttons and at Zara, halter-styles with chic draped detailing. At Incu, Diesel are embracing biker energy with cool sleeveless logo tees, and our personal favourite, Bec + Bridge’s Domenica Boatneck Top, which can be worn over wide-leg jeans or capris for a classic Noughties silhouette.
