The Spring Racing Fashion Edit
Setting the tone for the Summer season, the Spring Racing Carnival is one of Melbourne’s biggest fashion moments in the calendar.
Elliot Garnaut, Chadstone's Official Stylist, has pulled together his style notes to help you navigate the Spring Racing circuit.
Be inspired by Elliot's trend report for your trackside looks this Carnival as he breaks down each day’s etiquette so you can put your best foot forward.
CAULFIELD CUP
"What was once a more relaxed race day, has become a track-side spectacular of preppy ladies and dandy gents alike.
Not too be taken too literally (this isn’t a Ralph Lauren campaign), approach the day with just the right amount of polish. Silks and linens paired back with wide brimmed hats will have you on the best-dressed list in no time."

COX PLATE
"An interim day that doesn’t garner as much media attention as it’s cousins, Cox Plate is the day to embrace relaxed racing.
For the gents – have fun with textures. For the ladies, embrace a summer garden dress paired with a more casual shoe. SHOCK HORROR but, yes, I approve a block heel for the Cox Plate."
- EG

DERBY DAY
"Be sure to check for horses as I’m not sure I’ve seen any on Derby Day?
It is safe to say fashion reigns supreme on day one of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Traditionally black and white in code – do not waver! Derby is a day of tradition and elegance. Refined yet effortlessly chic, take inspiration from old world charm."
- EG

MELBOURNE CUP
"The day of MORE. This year we are seeing a resurface of the bold.
Bold colours, bold patterns, bold millinery. Don't worry about being trend focused, dress to impress in what you feel is the most accurate representation of your own unique trackside fashion. Rules out the window, champagne in hand."
- EG

OAKS DAY
"Ladies Day. Apparently not just for the Ladies. Gents are putting their best hoof forward on what has become a day of sartorial standouts.
Dress for Gatsby’s finest garden party and you’re on the right track. Fun patterns, muted pastels and bows a plenty. Giddy up!"
- EG

STAKES DAY
"Family Day. Prepare to chase after your kids!
The most relaxed race day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, yet similarly aesthetic to its cousin in Caulfield Cup. Don’t be afraid to play with gorgeous boaters and tonal looks. Let your hair down, you’ve earnt it!"
- EG
