Misaki Kawai is known for her ‘kawaii’ (playful) installations often made using papier-mâché, fabrics and craft materials. Her practice embraces the ‘heta-uma’ philosophy, a term derived from a Japanese manga movement and meaning ‘bad but good’. ‘Heta-uma’ work favours the idea over the technique. Kawai’s drawings and sculptures can be described as playful and exuberant, and yet show consideration in their use of colour, proportion and tactility. Her works evoke a sense of joy in the viewer.
Born in Japan in 1978, Kawai lives and works in Los Angeles and has exhibited at major galleries around the world, including MoMA PS1, New York and Watari Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo.
The naming competition for the Chadstone pup has now closed and we’re pleased to announce the winning name selected by Misaki Kawai is Mr Chad. Thank you to Carla Eramo for this winning submission.
Mr Chad, a one-of-a-kind large-scale dog installation created by Misaki Kawai exclusively for Chadstone is located in the heart of the centre on Ground Level, next to the Concierge Desk.
