My heart and my step quicken as I venture through the Imperial Gate of the Topkapi Palace. I step through the sultan’s entryway and back in time. I become part of the procession and the pageantry, ushering royalty through to rooms so decadent they are reserved only for the most momentous ceremonies. The sultans are gargantuan figures resplendent in intricate robes and dripping with jewels, striding through tiled archways and walls adorned with calligraphy. Fawning courtiers and concubines fall at their feet, but not being one for pomp or protocol, I exit with a wink.
