Converse continues to experiment, iterate and create through the lens of collaborations and by designing and developing new dimensions of product across sport, music and fashion.
On the heels of a recent re-introduction to performance Basketball with the launch of the All Star Pro BB, the latest concept from the Brand – Star Series – is ignited from a simple question: Can we push the boundaries of Converse product into spaces both familiar to our DNA and new?
To help answer the question, Converse enlisted athlete and architect turned Nike Inc. design legend—Tinker Hatfield, who has previously collaborated with Converse on the design of the All Star Modern HTM and Auckland Modern Low Top HTM, to name a few.
It’s well known that for Hatfield, the creative process is a reflection on a culmination of life experiences, personal interactions and world travel.
Like many Converse collaborators, the Chuck Taylor All Star was Tinker’s first vehicle for self-expression, wearing the black low-top and white high-top throughout his childhood, both on and off the basketball court.
These memories shape his relationship with the Brand. After reflecting on sport culture today, he theorized a family of products that nod to Converse’s design history in areas such as Basketball, but also experiment with the brand, both in aesthetic and desired function.
Developed in partnership with Converse, three new silhouettes were concepted – Star Series BB, Star Series RN and Star Series UT – crafted through lenses inherent to Converse and/or Nike’s respective histories across basketball (BB), running (RN), and utility (UT).
As Converse continues to re-emerge in basketball, there was a desire to incorporate elements of this performance DNA, but create something unexpected and versatile for every day wear on the streets. Enter: Star Series BB, a minimalist statement sneaker for those inspired by the court.
With elements reminiscent of the Chuck Taylor All Star, the silhouette is made with an open tongue construction that allows for unparalleled fit. Complemented by a Cushlon midsole hosting dimensional diamond textures, inspired by the Chuck Taylor All Star’s toe bumper, the silhouette is crafted on a modernized rubber outsole and touts a nylon ballistic mesh upper for breathability and durability for all-day wear.
With the ability of sneakers to transcend culture beyond intended function, Hatfield and team also designed a runner, one of the most popular performance sneakers adopted as a lifestyle offering, and chukka-inspired sneaker.
Borrowing lines familiar to heritage runners from both the Converse and Nike archives, the Star Series RN uses a familiar aesthetic and construction to the Star Series BB, also with a Cushlon midsole and a mesh upper to optimize comfort. The lifestyle runner features a rubber outsole with an embossed Converse Star Chevron logo in the foam window, which is meant to exemplify its sleek design.
Rounding out the pack, Star Series UT offers a runner’s take on a Chukka. With a durable mid-cut Cordura upper and premium suede tongue, the silhouette features a runner’s notch for an easy on-off, reinforcing its utilitarian roots and sport styling.
Made for everyday wear on the street to deliver exceptional comfort, the Star Series BB and Star Series RN will launch in two classic colorways and feature a Converse Star Chevron on the upper, with hints of reflectivity throughout.
