PURPLE REIGN

Twice a year, without fail, a single colour seems to emerge and define the entire season. For autumn winter 2022, it’s lilac.

Lilac’s influence on fashion has become swift and absolute. It’s there in pop culture: Kendall Jenner has been seen sporting a lilac leather tote from Givenchy’s new collection; Bella Hadid has reached for the colour in her much-papped off-duty outfits on more than one occasion; and lest we forget Harry Styles’ internet breaking lilac feather boa?

It’s also cropping up on the runway. At Kim Jones’ much-anticipated in-person runway debut for Fendi last September, lilac was everywhere from accents on oversized coats to the base colour for cascading silk evening dresses. Givenchy creative director Matthew Williams’ penchant for the colour is well-established (cue: Kendall’s handbag). And Valentino’s creative director Pierpaolo Picciolo is using lilac for shirting, accessories, and eveningwear.

Want to dabble with the new purple reign in your own wardrobe? Scanlan Theodore’s ribbed knit dress (available from David Jones) comes in a shade of violet so delectable, you’ll wonder why it took you so long to start wearing purple in the first place. Style it? With more lilac, of course. Gorman’s colour-matched sandals create a cohesive monotone look that feels instantly polished. Extra points if you try purple eyeshadow too.

Country Road’s silk lavender day dress is equally tempting and makes a grand statement all on its own. Accessories in a subtle shade of dusty pink are a great idea, just don’t forget to add drop earrings (when it comes to great winter fashion, the devil is in the detail).

For work, few things make a grander statement than a purple power suit. Hugo Boss’ new season iteration is impeccably tailored, seamlessly towing the line between masculine and feminine. A similarly-toned knit by Gorman creates a sense of sartorial cohesion, which is only amplified by a great pair of pointy-toed pumps (we recommend Bally). Prince would be so proud.
